Chuck Horning is a native of California and a resident of Newport Beach, California. As chairman of Newport Federal Financial, Mr. Horning also owns a number of holdings, including several ranches. Although he spends much of his time at his ranch in the Sierra Nevada foothills, restoring the land, Chuck Horning is also involved in the preservation of his ranches on Hawaii's Oahu Island. His California ranches are undergoing intensive restoration work, including preventing soil erosion.
Soil erosion is caused by water, wind, and agriculture. The resulting loss of soil can have a major impact on the environment and disrupt agricultural pursuits. Bank erosion is one form of water erosion, and often occurs when pipes and splash pads are improperly utilized or damaged. Another form is gully erosion, resulting from rill erosion from concentrated surface water runoff. Channels are formed, and can wash away further into gullies. Wind erosion is also an issue over large surfaces, occurring frequently when no vegetative protection is in place. Furthermore, tillage of land for agricultural purposes can create issues such as concentrated runoff or changes in the soil itself due to overuse.
Typically, the erosion takes place over a long stretch of time, with small increments being noticeable very slowly. Erosion can occur over large areas, but can also occur in patches near portions of land undisrupted by erosion, such as on farms. Preventing erosion requires attention to its causes and awareness of practices that can put soil at risk for degradation.
